AACRAO Black Caucus

Mission Statement

The Black Caucus supports professional development, networking, and the discussion of issues affecting black students and professionals throughout college and university communities. The Caucus engages in identifying solutions to issues surrounding access as well as examining ways to enhance and increase the representation of both black students and professionals within colleges and universities.

The Black Caucus connects via the Exchange, meets at the monthly Caucus Gatherings, writes articles, and hosts webinars throughout the year. They also convene at AACRAO’s Annual Meeting to discuss goals and visions that members have for their institutions, and to exchange ideas to build a better tomorrow. The Caucus is open to all AACRAO members interested in advancing the black community by facilitating community building, the exchange of ideas and information addressing critical issues, promoting leadership development and scholarship opportunities.

Statement from AACRAO Black Caucus on the verdict in the George Floyd murder case

"On Tuesday April, 20th when we learned of the guilty verdict on all three counts in the George Floyd murder case, our community was able to exhale a wave of emotions that have clutched our hearts and minds. This was not a moment of celebration; it was a moment to hold those accountable for the heinous and unnecessary death of George Floyd. The murder of George Floyd was a tipping point in the history of our nation that further exposed the pervasiveness of racial and social injustice that impacts communities of color. There continues to be a struggle to achieve racial equity and justice in our communities. The unnecessary death, brutality, and racial profiling of our people at the hands of those who are charged to protect and serve must stop. The microaggressions and macroaggressions that our community faces every day at school, at work, or simply by being in line at the grocery store must stop. We seized this moment for our mothers and fathers, sisters and brothers, aunts and uncles, and cousins and friends! Say their names, their lives matter!

The AACRAO Black Caucus celebrates diversity and along with the Association 'value and foster an environment that ensures respect, support, and safety for all members of their campus and professional communities, and actively promote the expansion of ideas, perspectives, and understanding that comes from a diverse and inclusive community.' Therefore:

  • We call for accountability!
  • We call for equitable actions that lead to inclusion!
  • We call for affirmation that our lives matter!
We seize each of these moments to fuel our movement and continue to forge on! Black Lives Matter, now and always!"

AACRAO's Black Caucus issues statement in support of AAPI community

"The Black Caucus stands in firm solidarity with our brothers and sisters of the Asian American and Pacific Islander community who have been targets of heinous acts of violence and discrimination. We must not be silent on these issues, but be champions for change when we witness implicit or explicit acts of racism, discrimination, or any form of injustice and violence." - incoming Caucus Chair, Bianca-Thompson-Owen
