New standards for electronic records and transcripts as well as other higher education changes present challenges to the work of electronic data exchange (EDX), according to the AACRAO Standardization of Postsecondary Education Electronic Data Exchange (SPEEDE) Committee. In a recent C&U article, committee members shared the history of EDX as well as a vision for the future.
The SPEEDE Committee has led much of the work related to electronic transcripts since the early 1990s. “An original problem was to identify a common format in which to exchange data between systems,” the committee writes. “Today there are several standardized formats, and the problem has shifted to identifying which format(s) should be used between potential institutional trading partners to maximize interoperability.”
The article discusses student mobility, paper transcripts, and technology solutions. It provides information on current order/request methods and sending/delivering/receiving methods. It also cites AACRAO Research surveys on EDX and a case study at San Diego State University.
“This article intended to inspire campuses to move forward with EDX as a tool for interoperability and student mobility,” the committee writes. “There are many resources available to assist with identifying best fit, cost benefits, project planning, buy-in, and questions to ask potential service providers.”
