In their upcoming 2023 AACRAO Annual Meeting session, hosts Keith Malkowski, and Bryan Whitledge, both of Central Michigan University will discuss the challenges involved with managing an ever-growing number of records. Throughout their session, attendees will gain insight into various practices they can use to manage recordkeeping compliance and preservation. Speaking on what attendees can expect when attending his session Mr. Malkowski said:
Between defined record laws and best practices and having legacy records in different formats is creating a concern for Registrars and other professionals in higher education. How do you know what you should keep? For how long? Where does everything live? Where can a campus partner go for answers? In our session, we plan to provide how Central Michigan University has built a structure to navigate these issues centered on cross-campus collaboration, compliance standards, and best practices.
As institutions of higher learning come to terms with the realities of having accumulated so many types of records and other artifacts, changes in staffing levels and departure of institutional wisdom with staff separations having a structure in place to ensure the integrity of certain classifications of records is critical for both compliance as well as maintaining institutional history. Central Michigan University has created a cross-unit response team to assist our colleagues to determine what to save, how to save it, and how to say goodbye to various items.
