International

Committed to the professional development of your international admissions and credential evaluation staff.

We are the premier provider of professional development, training, and current research on foreign educational systems, including AACRAO's Electronic Database for Global Education (EDGE)

AACRAO's History In The Field

AACRAO has a long history documenting, training, and developing best practices in foreign education, admissions, and records. While there are references in AACRAO’s archives from nearly 100 years ago, the work began to accelerate after World War II and with the ensuing Cold War with the Soviet Union. The growing number of international students and scholars led to the desire for more understanding and guidance of documentation, validation, and recognition. The United States, unlike the rest of the world, does not have an agency with functions similar to a Ministry of Education. AACRAO, along with a handful of other associations, worked on filling those needs.

In the decades since, AACRAO has provided research, publications, in-person, and hands-on training, and a dynamic Electronic Database for Global Education (AACRAO EDGE). As we continue to provide the information our membership, agencies, educators, and nations need to ensure global mobility and international admissions we are offering updated and enhanced Institutes and On-Demand Learning.

Impact of the International Education Standards Council (IESC)

In the absence of an overarching governmental body making lawful determinations on how to evaluate international credentials, the International Education Standards Council reflects the viewpoints of various experts in higher education and provides advice and guidance on understanding academic credentials. On the Council, there are representatives from admissions offices at both the graduate and undergraduate levels as well as professional credential evaluators familiar with the requirements of HEIs and eligibility requirements for visas to enter into the United States for further education or employment. These experts consider native education systems and their grading conventions to determine advice that is useful when developing institutional policies. These research-based decisions are outlined within AACRAO EDGE.

EDGE Overview

Education systems evolve and change over time, necessitating a resource to reference how to best understand credentials awarded from a given timeframe. AACRAO EDGE is a collection of information on education systems from around the world, providing descriptions of what is required to earn various credentials, what the learner can access in their native system with such a credential, as well as valuable notes from expert researchers and placement recommendations for the achievements in U.S. education system. Native grading scales that are crosswalked to suggested U.S. equivalence and placement advice on credentials is research-based, providing expert guidance that can be used to establish employment or placement within HEIs. Available at a discount for AACRAO Member Institutions, there is no other resource available that will aid your evaluation of international credentials as much as AACRAO EDGE.
