Origins of the STEM Gender Gap: Understanding the Impact of Gender Stereotypes from Preschooler to Professional

October 31, 2023

October 31, 2023 | 2:00-3:00 pm ET

Barriers to STEM form early for young girls, as gender biases associating science, math, and brilliance with men over women develop as early as age 6 and begin to affect girl’s interests, sense of belonging in STEM environments, and career aspirations. This talk will explore the emergence of gender stereotypes about STEM in childhood and how we can utilize knowledge of these origins to better address the barriers women face in higher education and the workforce. In addition, this talk will share research from both Developmental and Social Psychology which outlines interventions to improve women and girls’ interest and sense of belonging in STEM fields.
