Beginning on Oct. 1, 2016, students will be able to fill out the FAFSA for the 2017–18 school year. (In the past, they had to wait until January 1). In addition, applicants will no longer need to estimate income and tax information and will be able to retrieve their data directly from the IRS, right from the first day the FAFSA is available. Education in Crisis: Venezuela and Ukraine

March 23, 2022

Free Webinar | 2:00-3:15 pm ET

The crisis in Venezuela has its origins in hyperinflation brought on by price controls initiated by former President Hugo Chavez, and spiraling debt. Sanctions imposed in response to increasingly autocratic rule by Chavez's successor, Nicolas Maduro, and plunging oil prices have led to the current humanitarian crisis, which has been complicated by the COVID-19 pandemic. It has been difficult to obtain and verify academic records of the many Venezuelans who fled the country.

The armed conflict in Ukraine first erupted in 2014 and transitioned to a long stalemate with Russia centered around Russian- and Ukrainian-controlled border regions in the east. Russia launched a full-scale military invasion into Ukraine on February 24, 2022, and fighting has caused civilian casualties and pushed tens of thousands of Ukrainians to flee to neighboring countries.

How do each of these crises affect those enrolled in higher education? What impact do they have on access to and verification of records for the many Venezuelans and Ukrainians who have fled or are fleeing their country, as well as those who remain?
