The majority of countries in Asia do not provide scholarships to students seeking an education outside of those countries. Many more provide scholarships to foreign students seeking an education within those countries, and just as many provide scholarships for their own students wanting to study at a postsecondary institution within their country. As a result, most of the available scholarships for studying abroad are provided by agencies and foundations other than the government.

Thailand offers a scholarship for students wanting to study abroad through its Royal Thai Government Sponsorship Program. The program provides funding for four years for students pursuing a Bachelor ́s degree, two years for students pursuing a Master ́s degree, and three years for PhD students. Applicant requirements include a minimum GPA of 3.50 for Bachelor degree and PhD students or at least 2.75 for Master ́s degree students; 213 points on the Internet-based TOEFL or 6 on the IELTS; and must be Thai nationals. Moreover, recipients may be contractually obliged to work for the Thai government upon finishing their studies, depending on the type of grant awarded.
