Since 1959, AACRAO Awards have honored both members and non-members who demonstrate exceptional service and innovation in advancing higher education. Our Emerging Leader Award highlights outstanding contributions at national and regional levels and represents our association's commitment to recognizing and nurturing the next generation of higher education leaders.

This year, we selected two recipients of the Emerging Leader Award who demonstrate early promise in shaping the future of higher education. This award will be presented in person at the 110th AACRAO Annual Meeting. Still, along the way, we want you to get to know the people who embody the best of our AACRAO membership through their dedicated work.

The second part of our AACRAO Awards series features an interview with Portia LaMarr, Product Manager in the Office of Technology and Digital Innovation at The Ohio State University and co-host of the H.E.A.R.D. (Higher Education and Real Diversity) podcast. Here, we offer a glimpse into the future of higher education leadership.

What/Who influenced your decision to get involved with AACRAO?

I always wanted to be a part of AACRAO, but watching Roslyn Perry’s leadership through AACRAO encouraged me to volunteer for my first position. From that, my first nomination was from Dr. Tiffani Robertson to participate in Hill Day and Nominations & Elections (N&E).

What do you enjoy most about your work and/or involvement with AACRAO?

I enjoy working with colleagues from different institutions who experience the same challenges and exchanging how we have progressed.

Have you encountered any unexpected or notable experiences along your professional path?

Monique Snowden helped me navigate my career from the Registrar’s Office to the side of Information Technology. Through her career stories, she gave me a visual of someone who made a move and made it their own.

Who are your role models?

  • My mother, Ruby Dawson, for showing strength in the manner she did when raising me.

  • My daughter, Parker LaMarr. Watching her be so inquisitive about everything reminds me to do the same.

  • Beyonce. Duh.

  • RuPaul Charles helps me to remember not to take life too seriously.

What do you aspire to accomplish in the future?

I want to learn more about the role of Product Manager and see where that will lead.

What advice would you give to help others find their community at AACRAO?

Please understand I am speaking as an extrovert, and I realize it is not as easy as I say … but do what makes you comfortable and challenges you at the same time. Spark up that conversation, share your LinkedIn profile, or join a caucus/group—you never know where those opportunities can lead you.
