As we count down the weeks and days to our 110th AACRAO Annual Conference, we’re celebrating the outstanding individuals who exemplify leadership and innovation in higher education. We're featuring our two Emerging Leader Award winners in our AACRAO Awards series with an interview to highlight these professionals who have already left an indelible mark on our field early in their careers.

AACRAO Awards have celebrated excellence in higher education administration for over six decades. The Emerging Leader Award, in particular, identifies and honors those rising stars early in their career whose unique contributions and national impact hint at even greater achievements to come.

In this interview, we sit down with Michelle Gruber, Associate Registrar, Registration and Records, Butler University, whose work has caught the attention of leaders nationwide. Here, we offer a glimpse into the future of higher education leadership.

What or who influenced your decision to get involved with AACRAO?

Dr. Curtis Clock from Ball State University was my primary inspiration for getting involved with AACRAO. I witnessed Curtis's leadership at the state, local, and national levels, and his dedication motivated me to pursue similar opportunities. His influence, friendship, and mentorship were instrumental in encouraging me to attend business meetings, lead the state/local organization, and participate in a Professional Activities Committee (PAC) at AACRAO. Curtis's guidance has been a driving force in my own professional involvement within the association.

What do you enjoy most about your work and/or involvement with AACRAO?

What I most appreciate about my involvement with Indiana-ACRAO (IACRAO) and AACRAO are the invaluable networking opportunities. Through the association, I have the privilege of connecting with outstanding leaders, mentors, colleagues, and friends. I've found that registrars are some of the field's most engaging and dynamic professionals. Additionally, I enjoy deepening my understanding of higher education policies, best practices, and emerging technologies, enriching my personal and professional growth.

Have you encountered any unexpected or notable experiences along your professional path?

My journey into higher education began somewhat by chance. I had always envisioned myself becoming a teacher—until I actually stepped into the role. When an opening for an Assistant Registrar became available at my alma mater, I discovered my passion for registration. I am deeply grateful to those who took a chance on me despite my limited experience in higher education at the time. I’m impressed by the unwavering support and encouragement my current institution has provided for my ongoing professional development.

Who are your role models?

My role models include Dr. Clara Lovett, a passionate advocate for women's issues and diversity in higher education, and Michelle Obama, whose dedication to education and her efforts to create positive change in the world continue to inspire me.

What do you aspire to accomplish in the future?

In the future, I aim to expand my involvement with AACRAO and participate in additional Hill Days. Hill Day offers a unique opportunity to directly engage with and influence the policies that impact our daily work. My professional goal is to become a leading registrar and continue to inspire and encourage my colleagues to actively participate at the state, local, and national levels.

What advice would you give to help others find their community at AACRAO?

My advice for others seeking to find their community within AACRAO is to engage actively: attend meetings and caucus gatherings, participate in Hill Day, or contribute an article to AACRAO Connect. By getting involved in areas of higher education and community that resonate with you, you will connect with like-minded individuals who share your passions. Through this involvement, you'll build lasting professional relationships, form meaningful friendships, and enjoy the experience along the way.
