In the last month, the new administration has issued a record number of Executive Orders and a flurry of other administrative actions that impact higher education. We continue to communicate AACRAO priorities to Congress and now to the new administration. We also continue to coordinate with our colleague associations because we know strategic and coordinated advocacy is effective.
Most recently, we shared the results of the collective advocacy of the higher education associations--the administration’s decision to extend the reporting deadline for the GE/FVT reporting to September 30, 2025. We will continue to work with our partners across the higher education community to analyze the administration's statements and develop guidance for our members. We will post information on our website and in the AACRAO Exchange as it is available.
The “Dear Colleague” letter released by the U.S. Department of Education late Friday, February 14, 2025, clearly signals the administration’s intent. I want to reassure you that we are paying attention to each action and assessing the implications for our member institutions. We urge institutions to consult legal counsel as they consider next steps.
The new year and new administration have created uncertainty for our community. I feel and understand your sense of overwhelm by the volume of activity coming from our nation’s capital over the past month. Amid this turmoil, one thing remains steadfast – AACRAO’s unwavering commitment to our community. As one of the oldest higher education associations in this country, we are rooted in our values. This will not change.
Our strength lies in our mission, values, and – within us. I encourage you to lean into your AACRAO community for resources and support. The AACRAO community stands shoulder-to-shoulder in our unwavering commitment to education’s potential as the great equalizer. By adhering to our principles, together we can reshape the future of higher education for the benefit of all learners.
Melanie Gottlieb,
AACRAO Executive Director
