Recently, the right to privacy has become a major issue in American politics. Starting in the 20th century with contraceptives and abortion, the right to privacy debate has now evolved to include transgender bathroom usage and gay marriage, among other topics. While the Obama Administration has championed the right to privacy, it has failed in other areas of concern.
Currently, a coalition of student privacy rights organizations and individuals is accusing the Obama Administration of failing to protect student data from unauthorized disclosures. The coalition is currently requesting that the Department of Education strengthen federal laws to prevent unauthorized disclosures of students' personal information.
This petition was sent to Secretary of Education John King and states that several changes made to FERPA, otherwise known as the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, over the years has allowed education agencies and organizations to give third parties student data without the permission of the student or their parents. The petition also states that the Department of Education has failed to protect student data from major breeches that have occurred at numerous schools and colleges.
