The House voted 69-17 Monday night to block the state's public colleges and universities from taking any adverse or disciplinary action against a student or employee with a handgun-carry permit for keeping their gun in their vehicles on campus.
The Senate approved the bill last week but the House added a relatively minor amendment that requires it to return to the Senate for what will likely be final approval. The amendment says the postsecondary institution cannot take any adverse or disciplinary action against an employee or student of the institution with a permit "solely" for keeping the gun in their car.
The Senate approved the original bill 29-0 last week and is expected to concur with the House amendment and send the bill to the governor. To comply with the law, permit holders who are employees or students must keep the gun out of sight and in either a locked glove compartment or lock box, in their locked vehicles while parked. It does not allow them to go armed outside their vehicle.
