Colleges can apply for $60 million in grants through the U.S. Department of Education's second "First in the World" innovation competition. The grants are meant to fund "the development and testing of innovative approaches and strategies to improve postsecondary education attainment," the department said in a news release on Friday.
The total amount of money available through the program is down from $75 million in its inaugural year. Those grants went to 24 colleges. Of the funding available this year, $16 million has been set aside for minority-serving institutions like historically black colleges.
Details about this year of the program are set to be published in Monday's Federal Register. The deadline for applications is June 26, and grants will be awarded by September 30 at the latest.
