Accused of misleading students with distorted promises of high-paying careers and saddling students with loans they're unable to pay, CollegeAmerica has been sued by the state of Colorado.
The private, for-profit school, which has three Colorado locations — Fort Collins, Denver and Colorado Springs — allegedly uses "deceptive trade practices," according to the complaint.
The lawsuit seeks to remedy "ongoing deceptive trade practices and protect consumers from irreparable and immediate harm," according to the late-December filing in Denver District Court.
The state takes issue with a wide variety of practices by the college, according to court documents, including an advertising campaign that lures students with the promise: "You could earn a million dollars more over your lifetime if you hold the right degree."
Graduates of the college, which also has campuses in Arizona and Wyoming, earn on average $10.97 per hour, after earning an associates degree from the school, according to the suit.
The AG says since 2006, about 70 percent of College America students in Colorado and Wyoming dropped out.
