The U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights is now reviewing 76 colleges and universities for how they handle sexual assault cases, federal officials confirmed Wednesday.
The Education Department began investigating Kansas State University on Aug. 4, and Johns Hopkins University and UCLA on Aug. 8. Stony Brook University in New York came under investigation on July 23.
Each school is being reviewed for whether it violated the gender equity law Title IX in its handling of sexual violence cases. Investigations can take from one to several years, and typically result in resolution agreements forcing policy and staffing changes on the university's part.
