The U.S. Department of Education fined the University of Nebraska at Kearney $65,000 for violations of the Clery Act, the university announced on Monday. The fine action notification stems from a 2010 compliance review of how the campus compiled and reported crime statistics in its 2009 Annual Security Report, which included statistics for the years 2006-2008.

The university said the department had fined the university $27,500 for two violations – one related to the geographical breakdown of incidents reported and another regarding the notification of prospective graduate students and employees. The department levied an additional $10,000 fine for improperly reporting a burglary as larceny.

"UNK is a safe campus, with very low rates of crime over all and very few violent incidents," said Kelly Bartling, a university spokeswoman, in a written statement. "We are disappointed in the nature and magnitude of these fines, but will remain proactive and vigilant in terms of campus safety and compliance."
