Leading people and organizations requires a complex set of competencies and skills including vision-setting, planning, and inspiring a team. The leadership landscape in higher education is increasingly volatile and requires adaptability and sound decision-making. Selecting and developing a leadership team then anchoring them around a common goal/purpose is the charge of the leader. It requires clear communication regarding goals and a willingness to listen. Leaders must be humble enough to see criticism of their ideas through the lens of making things better. Creating a culture where support and challenge of leadership is valued is essential to developing a strong, effective leadership team. Balancing leadership theory from noted authors and researchers in leadership and human potential with real-world experience from higher education, business, and the military, the speakers will share strategies for creating a culture of leadership and fostering courageous followership (Chaleff, 2009) on campuses.
