The importance of professional acknowledgement

Most AACRAO members are not driven by acknowledgement or acclaim--they serve students and institutions because they believe in higher education and have a strong sense of professional responsibility.

"Awards are not necessarily things that we think about as we progress in our profession," says Bill DeWolf, last year’s winner of AACRAO's Thomas A. Bilger Citation for Service Award. However, the honor of recognition is a humbling and moving experience for recipients.

“I am very humbled to have been chosen for this award,” said Ann West, when she was recognized with the Centennial Award.

Do you know someone whose work deserves recognition?

AACRAO's success as a national higher education association is propelled by member commitment. Since 1959, AACRAOs Board of Directors has recognized members for their distinguished service to the association and the profession through the AACRAO Awards.

Awards will be given in the following categories:

  • The Emerging Leader Award is presented to professionals who have made an exceptional or unique contribution which demonstrates promise as a future AACRAO leader.
  • The AACRAO Centennial Award for Excellence is awarded to an individual who is not an AACRAO member, but has made a contribution to or influenced the higher education community in a notable and positive manner.
  • The Award for Excellence in International Education is presented to a member who has not only made an impact on the profession but also on those who serve it.
  • The Elbert W. Ockerman State and Regional Professional Activity Award recognizes up to three outstanding professional activities of state/regional associations.
  • The Thomas A. Bilger Award is presented to an AACRAO member in recognition of consistent vision, service and/or leadership in AACRAO and with seven or more years of volunteer service.
  • The Distinguished Service Award recognizes an AACRAO member for exceptional contributions over an extended period of time for service to AACRAO at the national level in the areas of program, scholarship, committee or other activities worthy of recognition.
  • Honorary Membership is awarded by the Board of Directors to members, who are retiring from a member institution or leaving the profession and have accumulated a minimum of 100 points, in recognition of their active involvement and contribution to AACRAO.

Recipients will be recognized at next year's AACRAO Annual Meeting in Baltimore -- April 12-15, 2015.

The nomination period is open until October 31st. To learn more and to submit a nomination, visit the AACRAO Awards page.
