Diversify your international student population by capitalizing on scholarship opportunities for both international and study abroad students. This ongoing resource will from AACRAO will highlight opportunities by focusing on particular regions, now featuring Asia.

The majority of countries in Asia do not provide scholarships to students seeking an education outside of those countries. Many more provide scholarships to foreign students seeking an education within those countries, and just as many provide scholarships for their own students wanting to study at a postsecondary institution within their country. As a result, most of the available scholarships for studying abroad are provided by agencies and foundations other than the government.

Nevertheless, students in Asia looking for scholarships to study abroad can find a list here. And for a list of scholarships available to international students in general, students can look here.

Pakistan has several scholarship opportunities. However, most of those opportunities are either for students wanting to stay in Pakistan or for PhD students wanting to study abroad.

The Punjab Educational Endowment Fund (PEEF) has been established in Pakistan to provide scholarships for postsecondary studies. The majority of the scholarships awarded for studying abroad are given to PhD students, though the Overseas Pakistanis Foundation reportedly provides scholarships for all levels of postsecondary study abroad; the caveat is that those students must be the children of Pakistanis abroad who are registered with OPF. Nevertheless, the PEEF “has awarded more than 235,000 scholarships worth more than Rs.11.5 billion. With the inclusion of current year's 115,000 scholarships; the total number of scholarship awarded by June 2018 will exceed 350,000 with an estimated worth of Rs. 18.25 bullion,” according to https://www.peef.org.pk/Overseas_Pakistani_Fund.html.

The Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan provides several scholarships for masters and PhD students wanting to complete their studies abroad: the Overseas Scholarship Aghaz-e-haqooq-e-balochistan Project and the US-Pakistan Knowledge Corridor PhD Scholarship Program. The last program was established as part of the Education, Science and Technology Working Group (ESTWG) between the U.S. and Pakistan to “ to support Pakistan's efforts to strengthen its University system by jointly increasing the number of Pakistani faculty who obtain their Ph.D. in the US universities,” according to https://hec.gov.pk/english/scholarshipsgrants/US-Pakcorridor/Pages/default.aspx. The goal is for 10,000 Pakistani scholars to join US universities in the next ten years.
