As the first-year freshman population continues its decline, better serving transfer and adult learners should be a focus for all of higher education. AACRAO is focused on supporting institutions in adapting through our partnerships and initiatives in learning mobility.

Harnessing AI for Credit Mobility

Our path is clear. We are preparing professionals to lead institutional transformation, supporting equitable policy and practices that expand the recognition of learning and its integration into academic pathways for credentials or degrees. By responsibly embracing new and emergent technology as an accessible public good for all institutions and learners, our work will create new opportunities for learning to be recognized within higher education and in the workforce. New infrastructure is necessary for learners to attain credit for their prior learning in both traditional and non-traditional settings, and we are supporting institutions to develop new structures and systems that can move learners’ knowledge and skills data across systems at scale.

And we are not working alone. The American Association of Community Colleges (AACC), The Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities (APLU), and Sova are working with Dr. Zach Pardos, the Associate Professor of Education and Director of the University of California at Berkeley’s Computational Approaches to Human Learning research lab and the developer of the CourseWise software platform—all are part of the ATAIN initiative. This national groundbreaking collaborative harnesses cutting-edge AI to supercharge equitable credit mobility. AACRAO Executive Director Melanie Gottlieb serves on the Advisory Board for ATAIN.

“We are excited to be a part of this collaboration with AACC and APLU and its alignment with our Learning Mobility initiatives,” Gottlieb said. “I have been following Dr. Pardos since he spoke at the 2021 AACRAO Technology Summit and am excited by how far the work has come. The application of AI to support course-matching recommendations for evaluators and faculty promises to integrate previous learning into academic pathways faster and more efficiently, removing barriers for learners to achieve the credentials they seek.”

Apply to Join the Inaugural Cohort of ATAIN

You and your institution can help trailblaze this initiative by applying to join the first ATAIN cohort and gain access to pilot the CourseWise software platform. Think about the impact you could have by paving the way for every student’s path to success to be clear and their achievements to be truly valued. You can be part of this revolutionary effort to create a reality where every student’s hard work counts, regardless of where they started.

Improving transfer credit mobility isn't just about efficiency. It's about giving learners a fair shot at achieving their degrees without unnecessary barriers along their academic journey, facilitating degree completion, and lowering educational costs.
