Continuing our AACRAO Awards celebration of exceptional contributions to higher education, we now focus on the dynamic partnership between AACRAO and its state and regional associations, representing one of our profession's fundamental strengths. Through this vital relationship, overseen by AACRAO's Vice President of Leadership and Management Development and the State and Regional Relations Committee, we've built informal networks that enhance the professional development of individual members nationwide.

This collaborative spirit shines brilliantly in this year's Elbert W. Ockerman State and Regional Professional Activity Award recipient, the Chesapeake and Potomac Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers, honored for pioneering Maryland's first-ever Dual Enrollment Summit in 2024. This milestone achievement drew over 70 education professionals.

Johnika Nixon, the 2023 CAPACRAO President, accepts the award on behalf of the organization. Nixon played a pivotal role in setting the organization’s annual objectives, revitalizing the Dual Enrollment Special Interest Group, and strengthening corporate sponsorships and stakeholder relationships.

What/Who influenced your decision to get involved with AACRAO?

My journey with AACRAO began through my connection with CAPACRAO, my State & Regional Association in 2018. I had the privilege of collaborating with remarkable colleagues across Maryland and the District of Columbia, who embraced my skills and inspired me. Leaders like Dr. Seth Kamen, Dr. Kimberly McNair, Jamie Kruger, Sheena Lyons, Carol Harrison, Cassandra Moore, and Keisha Campbell shaped my perspective and ignited my passion.

After attending the S&R Lunch in Los Angeles, I felt a call to action and was invited to join the Records and Services PAC for the Distinct Populations Committee. My experience with dual enrollment initiatives allowed me to contribute meaningfully by delivering content and reviewing conference proposals, further fueling my commitment to this important work.

What do you enjoy most about your work and/or involvement with AACRAO?

What I cherish most about my journey with AACRAO is the unwavering sense of belonging it fosters. From the very beginning, I have felt embraced by a community that values intelligence and a commitment to lifelong learning. The conversations we share are not just insightful; they are the catalysts for innovation and growth.

AACRAO truly embodies the spirit of collaboration, where every voice matters and every idea has the potential to blossom into impactful initiatives. It empowers us to transform our visions into reality, enriching the broader educational landscape. Being part of this organization inspires me to dream bigger and engage deeper, knowing that we can make a profound difference together.

Have you encountered any unexpected or notable experiences along your professional path?

Yes, my most notable experience was with the ASCEND Leadership Development Program. It all began with a leap of faith, applying on a whim, never expecting to be accepted. That moment was a catalyst that radically transformed my career trajectory. Through the hands-on experience of creating an SEM plan under the guidance of incredible coaches, I discovered a renewed sense of self, strengths, and purpose.

Since that experience, I’ve embarked on a series of achievements—transitioning into a new role, becoming certified as a Career Coach, partnering with a Human Resources firm to offer my services, and even returning to school to complete my doctoral degree.

Now, I have the privilege of coordinating the ASCEND Program, allowing me to give back and co-direct efforts for the same community that has supported my growth. I am honored to continue to flourish within the unique environment AACRAO has cultivated through its LEAD initiative. It's a space where I am inspired, along with others—the graduates, scholars, and coaches—to reach our greatest potential while nurturing our well-being.

Who are your role models?

  • Personally, my ancestors, my mother, and my son.
  • My ASCEND Coaches are Dr. Tomikia LeGrande and Jody Gordon.
  • Literary scholars include Yolande Cornelia Giovanni Jr., known as Nikki Giovanni, and Bell Hooks.
  • Educators Marian Edelman Wright, Mary McLeod Bethune, and Marva Collins.
  • Game Changers Shirley Chisholm, Sheila Johnson, and Karen Hunter.
  • There are too many within AACRAO to name, but two immediate ones are Cassandra Moore and Kimberly McNair.

What do you aspire to accomplish in the future?

I’m so glad that you asked. I aspire to uplift my fellow enrollment management colleagues by promoting holistic well-being through ASCEND and my role as a well-being architect. I envision institutions nurturing their workforce with intentional learning and development. We want to do our jobs as efficiently as possible, but knowing how to job craft is as important as being appreciated by your supervisor or provided thoughtful feedback that balances your engagement.

I also aspire to ignite a passion for learning and development centered around the AACRAO Competencies. I envision joining the Speaker's Bureau to engage with institutions, offering training through the lens of career coaching for enrollment management units. AACRAO is sitting on a gold mine of resources, and I aim to harness my experience in managing onboarding and orientation to transform this framework into a user-friendly tool that empowers us all.
