AACRAO Connect letter from the editor, December 2024

Dear Readers,

“Quid pro quo.” This popular Latin phrase, also from a famous line in a notable movie from the 1990s, generally means “something given or received for something else” or “this for that.” In our daily working and living experience, we carry out transactional activities, such as processing application submissions, granting or restricting access to records, collecting graduation fees, scheduling childcare and doctor appointments, purchasing goods and services, and more.

We might also carve out space for "pro bono" work, giving time or resources for the public good, or for "gratis" work done without expectations or strings attached. As part of a professional and volunteer community, we are constantly involved in quid pro quo, pro bono, and gratis activities. Please consider the impact you have on each other and in the service of others each and every day.

AACRAO Gives is our moral and professional obligation to our membership and to the industry. In our professional relationships with each other, friends, family, and people worldwide, we can choose how to give. Think of the special person or people who gave to you or how you might be that special person who gives to someone else in the future, “ex gratia.” Happy Holidays, and see you in 2025.

With appreciation,

Autumn Walden
