C&U 100 Years, a century of sharing knowledge and best practices

By Heather Zimar, Managing Editor, Journals and Publications, AACRAO

Last week, AACRAO released the first issue in the 100th volume of College & University (C&U). AACRAO members, including past editors-in-chief, editorial board members, and writers, joined AACRAO Executive Director Melanie Gottlieb, staff, and current journal editors to celebrate this milestone with a “live” publishing event

Volume 100, Issue 1 features the types of content C&U readers are accustomed to seeing, including articles on first-generation students and college choice, best practices in the registrar’s office, interviews with higher education thought leaders, and leadership in HBCU registrars’ offices. In addition, the issue features special anniversary content including reflections by AACRAO Executive Director Melanie Gottlieb, Editor-in-Chief Christopher W. Tremblay and Managing Editor Heather Zimar as well as a historical look at higher education in 1925 by Kimberley Buster-Williams. C&U will feature more reflections and historical pieces over the next 2025 issues.

A Century of Sharing Knowledge and Best Practices

C&U was first published in July of 1925 as The Bulletin of the Collegiate Registrars. In 1948, the name changed to College & University: The Journal of the American Association for Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers and later to College & University (C&U) Journal. The journal has had sixteen different editors-in-chief, engaged more than 170 editorial board members, and published an estimated 7,000 articles.

Special Activities

C&U has launched a special 100th anniversary webpage where readers will find some C&U history, contributor testimonials, and information on the 100 Authors in 100 Days project. There is also an opportunity for readers and writers to help celebrate by sharing their C&U story.

Also, as part of the 100th anniversary, AACRAO has begun digitizing the full archive of C&U issues and has introduced a new AI research tool specifically designed for AACRAO members to query and explore C&U issues decade by decade.

Finally, AACRAO will celebrate the C&U 100th anniversary at the 110th AACRAO Annual Meeting in Seattle, Washington, March 30 - April 2 with special cupcakes, photo opportunities, a historical timeline, and displays honoring the four living editors-in-chief.
