AACRAO has released a white paper with executive summaries of four presentations and panels delivered at the Annual Meeting in Denver, Colorado earlier this year. The sessions highlighted in the paper address some of the most pressing issues faced by AACRAO members.
The presentations were chosen for inclusion in the white paper because of their timeliness and overall significance, but also because they convey a representative sampling of what the Annual Meeting has to offer in terms of professional development.
For example in “Reform Efforts in Federal and State Higher Education Policy,” David Longanecker, President of the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE), summarized the current federal and state policy agenda for higher education, and what AACRAO members and their institutions can do to both handle and influence those agendas in a positive way for students.
Also included in the white paper:
• “Telling New Stories: Native Americans and the Rich History of Excellence in Higher Education”
Mark Trahant (University of Alaska Anchorage) discussed how educated Native Americans and Alaska Natives can contribute to the U.S. economy and described several successful education programs targeted at these groups.
• “Emerging Trends in State Policy: What AACRAO Members Need to Know About Changes in American Education”
Members of the Education Commission of the States (ECS) discussed a range of state education policy issues including career and college readiness initiatives, dual enrollment, and remedial education.
• “America's International Student Enrollments in a Global Context"
Peggy Blumenthal and Christine Farrugia of the Institute of International Education (IIE) discussed trends related to international study—both international students coming to U.S. institutions and Americans studying abroad.
