AACRAO has released a white paper with executive summaries of four presentations and panels delivered at the Annual Meeting last month, where over 2400 professionals convened in San Francisco to discover new ideas and strategies for professional improvement.

The sessions highlighted in the paper address some of the most pressing issues faced by AACRAO members.

The presentations were chosen for inclusion in the white paper because of their timeliness and overall significance, but also because they convey a representative sampling of what the Annual Meeting has to offer in terms of professional development.

For example, in “Student Data Portability and the Groningen Declaration,” experts from around the world discussed the importance of efficient student mobility within expanding global education pathways, and how the Groningen Declaration promotes student data portability. Ministry members from Mexico, China, and all over Europe shared information about the advantages and pitfalls of their own systems, and how initiatives such as the Groningen Declaration can streamline processes.

Also included in the white paper:

• “MOOCs: What They Are and What You Need to Know”

AACRAO members Tom Black and Mark McConahay spoke with Mariana Losada from the Agence de Mutualisation des Universités et Établissements (AMUE) about the disruptive challenges and opportunities MOOCs present to existing business and academic models.

• “NACAC’s International Student Recruitment Commission: Practical and Ethical Implications of Agency-Based Recruitment

David Hawkins of the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) provided new information on the practice of incentive-based recruiting of international students and how it affects institutional mission and values.

• “Student Privacy in the Age of Big Data”

Policy makers and researchers at the federal, regional, and state levels talked about how to prudently collect educational and workforce information on students without compromising privacy laws.
