In the fall of 2016, Johnson County Community College in Kansas rolled out its Student Pathways program, which is designed to provide students with direction and guidance to help them meet the criteria for graduating. Resulting from the institution’s strategic planning process, the original mindset behind the program was to “accept greater responsibility for student success.” In the Student Pathways program, students are assigned a Student Success Advocate and are prescribed a plan to follow. Presenter Pete Belk, Director of Admission, discussed how JCCC got the program off the ground and lessons learned to date.
Belk detailed the early discussions about the program, successes encountered, and things that need to be changed now that the program has been implemented.
Moving Forward
The current implementation plan for the program is over the next 5 years. Belk outlined some of the plan:
-
Year 1: Develop predictive analytics
-
Year 2: Track student engagement across campus to improve predictive analytics model
-
Year 3: Create method of using predictive analytics to inform student choice model
-
Ongoing: Re-evaluate all student intake processes – what can be done when, and how to note what the student has completed
