The COVID-19 pandemic has strongly impacted enrollment and retention at higher education institutions nationwide. Through a research lens, one small private college implemented strategies to address these challenges.

In the latest SEMQ, author Jennifer B. Passenti shared the institution’s key efforts:

  • Collaboration
  • Technological advancements in enrollment and retention platforms
  • External support to reduce financial barriers (scholarships)
  • Investments in enrollment and retention support systems
  • Community partnerships and the creation of new academic programs and support systems.

Passenti’s study examined organizational change management theory and the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) and National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) data.

“It can be determined that institutional strategic planning formed the foundation needed to guide organizational change management through a time of crisis,” Passenti wrote. “This HEI’s master plan helped to build the roadmap securing the technological investments and infrastructure needed to sustain their enrollment and retention during the COVID-19 pandemic.”
