Summary : Understanding the important role Registrars at HBCUs have in disseminating FERPA knowledge.

Registrars at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have a key role in ensuring an active and ongoing infusion of FERPA knowledge and compliance, writes Harrison P. Johnson in the latest College & University. His article, Promoting FERPA in HBCU Environments: The Registrar's Role, is part of a year-long C&U series celebrating 50 Years of FERPA. Johnson discusses Black Cultural Activism in higher education and FERPA, the importance of ongoing and practical conversations with leadership across student services divisions, level-setting and developing personnel on FERPA law, and identifying FERPA-administrative authority.

The registrar’s integration of FERPA-safe practices and education within the institutional culture will prove to be paramount to the safeguarding of student records in a nurturing and familiar environment, Johnson wrote.

In another 50 Years of FERPA article, Sara Sullivan, Julie Fell, Kathryn Stoltenberg, and Jessica Alberhasky share how the University of Iowa (UI) established a FERPA team (UI-FT). The authors discuss how their team’s structure “supports a flexible framework with clear expectations to produce effective results.” From building a shared email box to offering cross-campus training to developing a consistent review process, the UI-FT is committed to educating their campus–and others–about FERPA.
