The first piece of advice that Jeff von Munkwitz-Smith offers to future leaders of AACRAO?

“Listen,” he encourages, in an interview with College & University Editor-in-Chief Christopher Tremblay. “Listen to the membership; listen to the committees; listen to the board; listen to the staff. Be collaborative! Have fun!”

Von Munkwitz-Smith has had many roles within AACRAO—board president, director of the AACRAO Technology conference, and editor-in-chief of College & University, to name a few. He carried out these positions in addition to his work in higher education—from various positions at the University of Minnesota to university registrar and director of summer programs at the University of Connecticut to assistant vice president and university registrar at Boston University. Now retired, he is currently a senior consultant with AACRAO Consulting.

In the C&U interview, published in the latest issue, von Munkwitz-Smith reflects on his work in higher education and with AACRAO, highlighting his role in the executive director search that brought in Mike Reilly, the streamlining of AACRAO’s student membership program, and the curation of content for College & University

He notes the critical need for volunteers to fill leadership positions and the importance of engaging young professionals in the association.

The conversation also covers why von Munkwitz-Smith wears bow ties—a style he shares with Tremblay—and the volunteer work he does in retirement.
