Wintley Phipps - Education Activist, Educator, Speaker - Founder and CEO of U.S. Dream Academy

Speaker, Activist, Founder and CEO of the United States Dream Academy, Wintley Phipps spoke to AACRAO members in the powerful closing 2021 Annual Meeting session on the most important qualities of a successful leader.

Mr. Phipps spoke to members about his childhood, early experiences, and leaders who inspired him throughout his life. Three of the leaders he spoke on, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Sir Winston Churchill, and Nelson Mandela, Mr. Phipps considers some of the greatest leaders the world has seen in his lifetime.

Mr. Phipps gave his personal definition of leadership as follows: “...Leadership means responding with effective inspirational creative solutions to the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of people...Every crisis; every challenging situation and circumstance, is an opportunity to demonstrate character and leadership.” “...To me leadership is applying character to crisis.”

Following his definition of leadership, Mr. Phipps provided members the following as the most important qualities of a successful leader:

  • Compassion

  • Courage

  • Conviction

  • Creativity

  • Competence

  • Character

  • Love

Throughout this part of the session, Mr. Phipps gave personal examples from his life, and others, of these qualities in action, his hope for the future, and what actions he is taking to improve higher education.
