Immigration/DACA

Trending Topic

In 2012, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services began accepting applications for the Obama administration’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. DACA provides temporary relief from deportation and a two-year work permit to qualifying young adults (ages 15 to 30) who were brought to the U.S. illegally as children. The program does not provide a pathway to citizenship.

The Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act is a legislative proposal for a multi-phase process for undocumented immigrants in the United States that would first grant conditional residency and upon meeting further qualifications, permanent residency. The senate bill was first introduced in 2001 by Durbin and Hatch and has since been reintroduced several times but has failed to pass.

With a new administration in office that has a focus on immigration, it is imperative AACRAO members stay abreast of developments on this topic.
