This year, AACRAO IES will expand its professional development and training offerings with new content, new formats, and new delivery methods in order to meet the needs of busy and budget-conscious international education professionals.

In a field as dynamic as international education, it is difficult for institution-based professionals to stay abreast of the changes and trends in the field.   AACRAO is committed to remaining a resource for member institutions and professionals.

“Through engagement with the Electronic Database for Global Education (EDGE), our evaluation contracts, our research,  and the development of new resources and training, AACRAO is more committed than ever to supporting and collaborating with our professionals engaging the fields related to international education ” says Deputy Director Melanie Gottlieb.

International credential evaluation training

A 2015 AACRAO 60-second survey on International Recruitment Practices indicated that 38% of AACRAO institutions perform their own credential evaluations; another 36% use a combination of a service and in-house resources. AACRAO is offering training to support that work.

The first of the new training formats, a 2-Day Intensive on International Credential Evaluation, will be offered in San Antonio Texas November 7-8th, co-located with the AACRAO Strategic Enrollment Management conference.   In this new workshop format, senior faculty and AACRAO staff members LesLee Clausen and Annetta Stroud will cover industry best practices of foreign credential evaluation for undergraduate and graduate admissions.

Topics will include:

  • best practice methods and principles of evaluation,
  • how to understand credentials from nine of the top sending countries (UK, Japan, Korea, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Taiwan, Vietnam, China and India), and
  • how to determine if applicants meet your institutional admissions criteria.

The intensive will offer hands-on practical experience grounded in best-practice theory in a collaborative and engaging environment.  Attendees will gain skills and knowledge that they can apply to their work immediately.

Register for the 2-day crash course or check out the full lineup of training and workshops. More are added every month.

Call for applicants

An increase in course enrollment means we need more faculty! AACRAO is pleased to announce an Open Call for AACRAO Summer and Winter Institute Faculty. We seek faculty that represent the breadth of US higher education, so applications are encouraged from small and large, public and private, 2-year and 4-year AACRAO member institutions.  Institute faculty are volunteer positions; travel plus an honorarium is awarded for teaching days.

Teaching for the AACRAO Institute is a great professional development opportunity for international admission and international credential evaluation professionals who are interested in supporting the field and deepening their own engagement with current questions and issues in the profession.

"I love being on the Faculty for the AACRAO IES Institutes.” says faculty member Annetta Stroud. “It gives me a unique opportunity to engage with international education professionals from all over the world, and to not only teach, but to learn what current issues affect a broad cross-section of institutions so we can best work to find solutions together."

The chosen candidates will work with Institute Faculty to support current and future training initiatives to deliver effective presentations both on-site and in web-based trainings.
