AACRAO and IMS Global Learning Consortium co-hosted the first CLR Roundtable on June 29 — the first in a monthly open forum to discuss and get expert advice on implementing a comprehensive learner record project at your institution. This introductory meeting focused on the “what and why” of the Comprehensive Learner Record (CLR) as a valuable new way to collect, document, and share all student learning and experiences.

CLR is the new generation of secure and verifiable digital learning records, part of an interconnected ecosystem where educational institutions, other learning organizations, and employers recognize learning outcomes, achievements, and competencies. CLRs equip learners with a modern, 360-degree view of their knowledge and skills — beyond formal education and training — to present to potential employers and other institutions.

“This is an official record for the 21st century with the authority and backing of the institution demonstrating an individual student’s achievement,” said roundtable co-host Dr. Tom Green, Associate Executive Director at AACRAO. “The CLR is designed to recognize learning across an individual student's educational journey.”

Jeff Bohrer, roundtable co-host and IMS Technical Program Manager, said, “It’s an exciting time to work on new ways to recognize learners to serve them better as they pursue employment and further education opportunities in a continuously evolving economy.”

"To achieve this goal, IMS is working across K-12, higher education, and corporate learning," Bohrer said. "Institutional strategies for using digital credentials, especially CLR, are needed to empower learners of all types to reach their goals. Furthermore, we believe the CLR represents a unique opportunity for employers to identify talent.”

With over 560 member organizations, the IMS community leads the groundbreaking work to enable verifiable, interoperable digital credentials that transform how we recognize skills and achievement. Join the conversation with AACRAO, IMS, and partners on how to move a CLR project forward at your institution. Stakeholders from all areas of campus are welcome to participate.

Visit the IMS CLR Roundtable: Learn & Lead series event page to get the recording of the June meeting and details on how to join the next one on Monday, July 27, at 11:30 a.m. (EDT).
