The Pancyprian exams used by final year students to apply to universities in Cyprus and Greece began on Friday with the modern Greek paper, taken by all students.
But this is just the start, Education Minister Athena Michaelidou said visiting those at the Dasoupolis lyceum in Nicosia.
“The message we are giving [them] is that this specific exam is not the end but quite the opposite, [it is] the beginning of a path that can be brilliant and worthy, and which depends mainly on them,” the minister said.
“We came to wish good luck to our students because we know how critical this moment is,” she added.
The exams will last until June 29, with core maths as the final exam.
On Friday a total of 5,249 students sat the Greek exam.
In its instructions, the ministry reminded examinees that in case of a confirmed positive case of Covid-19 the student should report to the examination centre as usual, however, taking all precautionary measures to prevent the spread of the disease, including masking.
Pupils have been instructed to inform the invigilator who will in turn ensure the smooth conduct of the examination.
Comprehensive details on all examination procedures are available on the ministry’s online platform.
