When the demonstrators tried to dismantle a fence protecting the Prime Minister, the police used tear gas on the students, which was surprising because the Hungarian police have been very cautious about demonstrations since Fidesz came to power.
Thousands of students and teachers demonstrated this Friday in the capital of Hungary. A quiet protest, but with some tense moments with the police when some of the protesters marched on the headquarters of the ruling Hungarian party Fidesz.
The protesters demand better salaries and working conditions for educators and ask for the repeal of a bill that would cancel the status of teachers as public employees.
“We want better education, better conditions in schools, better salaries for our teachers,” points out one of the demonstrators
“I’m here for education as a whole, starting from kindergarten, from nursery to higher education, because we have basic problems in the whole system,” indicate another
The growing Hungarian student movement has been staging similar protests for several months.
The Government of Viktor Orban attributes the lack of salary increases for teachers to the freezing of European funds. Hall which is due to the Hungarian breach of the rule of law.
