The province of Buenos Aires announced on Thursday that starting next year, the traditional system of repeating a year in secondary school will be eliminated in favor of one that will be governed by the passing of subjects.
This was explained by the Director General of Culture and Education of Buenos Aires , Alberto Sileoni , who explained that in the new scheme the importance will be placed on the accreditation of approved subjects and not on the years.
According to the system that will be implemented in 2025, students will not be forced to retake all the subjects of the year - if they do not pass the minimum required for that period - but only those they have failed.
The subjects that were not passed - up to four - will be given an accelerated course between December and March to see if the situation can be reversed.
If more than four tests are failed in one year, those exceeding that number must be retaken in the following school year.
The update of the Academic Regime (RA) was unanimously approved this Thursday by the General Council of Culture and Education of Buenos Aires.
Sileoni stressed that "a very important aspect is that each institution can organize itself according to its reality and that in this way the trend of secondary school accompanies students more ."
"This proposal responds to the demand for the transformation of secondary schools. It includes the proposals put forward by teachers, students, and school principals. It recovers good experiences already implemented ," Sileoni added .
The minister explained that "with the new system, grading is done by quarter and students pass with a grade of 7 or more. Subjects that have been passed are not retaken. Subjects that have yet to be passed are taught and studied more because they are intensified or retaken until students acquire the knowledge . "
And he added: " No one studies alone : four more periods of intensification and deepening of teaching and study are established. Up to four subjects in total pending approval from previous academic years can be intensified. Starting with the fifth pending subject, it will be defined which four subjects are intensified and which are retaken."

The reform that will be carried out by Axel Kicillof 's administration proposes a new form of accreditation to "value effort and achieve more learning." To this end, the following modifications are introduced.

Although the new forms of grading, evaluation and accreditation of subjects will be applied in March 2025 , in the coming weeks we will begin working with the district's schools to correctly implement the changes.
