Mailis Reps, the Minister of Education and Research of Estonia sent a letter to her international colleagues regarding the state examinations in Estonia in 2020.
Minister Reps informed that graduation from upper secondary school would not be conditional on the completion of final exams in Estonia in 2020. This means that upper secondary school graduation certificate (Gümnaasiumi lõputunnistus) obtained in 2020 in Estonia gives access to higher education without the completion of state exams. On a regular basis, graduation from upper secondary school is conditional on the completion of three state examinations.
In 2020, students will be able to take two state exams on a voluntary basis: in Estonian or Estonian as a second language, and in mathematics. As an exception, state exam in English will not be held this year. However, students will be given the opportunity to take an internationally recognised language test in English as well in German, French or Russian. According to the laws of the Republic of Estonia, internationally recognised language test is equated to a foreign language state exam.
