Newly-Elected Democratic Governors on Higher Ed

Tuesday’s elections resulted in Democratic gubernatorial wins in Virginia and New Jersey.

Virginia elected current Lieutenant Governor Ralph Northam to serve in the state’s top office. Northam has pledged to provide more money to public higher education, reported Inside Higher Ed. Further, he has encouraged public universities to provide level tuition rates for entering students for four years to provide "predictability" about college expenses.

New Jersey’s Governor-elect Phil Murphy is a proponent of tuition-free community college. He has also promoted plans to increase state appropriations to public higher education and minimize the need for tuition increases. Murphy has, additionally, signaled interest in creating a state program to help borrowers refinance student loans.
