House Democrats Announce Higher Education Proposals

Democratic members of the House Education and the Workforce Committee recently proposed a campaign of higher education proposals to address access, affordability and completion, reports Inside Higher Ed.

Virginia Democrat Bobby Scott and other Committee members held a conference call with reporters regarding the "Aim Higher" plan. Democrats will use the campaign to negotiate their position ahead of the reauthorization of the Higher Education Act. In addition, they signaled their intent to release legislation over the next few months centered on those issues. For example, Representative Susan Davis, a California Democrat, told Inside Higher Ed that she would introduce a bill to make the Pell Grant more sustainable.

John B. King, president and CEO of Education Trust and former education secretary, said emphasis on improving outcomes for all students, including underserved students, should be a key focus.
