FCC Proposes $1 Billion to Aid Recovery Efforts in Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) this week proposed a $1 billion package to rebuild and expand broadband networks in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, The Hill reported. Both territories were devastated by hurricanes last year.

Under the proposal, $64 million would go toward immediate efforts to restore existing networks while the remaining $954 million would be dedicated to medium- and long-term projects to expand mobile and fixed broadband networks.

FCC Chairman Ajit Pai urged the rest of commission to support the proposal.

"With the 2018 hurricane season less than three months away, we need to take bold and decisive action," Pai said.
