Education Dept. Issues New Guidance on IRS DRT for 2018-19 FAFSA Cycle

The U.S. Education Department on Monday issued new guidance on changes to the IRS Data Retrieval Tool Process for the 2018-19 Free Application for Federal Student Aid cycle. The technical guidance provides an overview of the government’s planned new security features for the tool, which helps students apply for federal aid.

Earlier this year, the department and the IRS suspended access to the tool over concerns that identity thieves were misusing the tool to obtain taxpayer information.

The department previously stated that that the data retrieval tool will be restored for aid applicants by the 2018-19 FAFSA cycle, which begins on October 1.
