NCAA Academic Reform Update: Improving the Academic Performance of Student-Athletes

Monday, April 13, 2015 10:45 AM - 11:45 AM

What do you plan to share with the AACRAO Community at our Annual Meeting?

I plan to discuss recent developments in the NCAA and provide an update on legislation adopted by the NCAA Division I and II academic governance committees.  I’ll also share best practices regarding certifying progress-toward degree, transfers, and the NCAA's Academic Performance Program data collection.   I also hope to answer questions and take any feedback that attendees might have.

Can you provide insight into the best practices that you plan to discuss?

I want to emphasize the importance of having cross-functional meetings with different offices across campus. There's nothing more exciting than an interdepartmental staff meeting right? I really think that enrollment management, academic departments and student support services must keep consistent, open lines of communication.

I think it is also important to recognize the challenges related to the recruitment and evaluation of transfer student-athletes. It's integral that expectations and procedures are developed university wide so student-athletes have accurate and timely information to make enrollment decisions.

What is a hot topic in intercollegiate athletics right now?

Academic misconduct and Academic integrity issues are a major focus for us right now.  It is important for the audience to be aware of how the NCAA is proceeding in these areas even if many attendees are not on the “front lines” of academic integrity issues.

What would you like attendees to take with them from your presentation?

I hope they have an understanding of the NCAA’s current focus.  I also hope they benefit from the experiences of others who attend my session and from making contacts with people who are facing similar challenges.  Having a network of colleagues to contact once they return to their own campuses will be invaluable.
